Lunch with Aunt Phyllis and Grandpa

For whatever reason, I never called Phyllis "Aunt Phyllis"...it's always been just Phyllis, but for the title of the post, I thought it was appropriate. Phyllis is my Dad's sister; they are very close in age and as far as the stories I've heard, they had a lot of fun growing up together. My dad married mom and we grew up living nextdoor to my grandparents as well as Phyllis. Grandma died a few years back, and Phyllis is dedicated to taking care of Grandpa. We decided to meet for lunch at Mexican Inn, one of the few places that Phyllis can still take Grandpa, because they are aware of his particular needs.
I snapped this picture as we were leaving, and I forgot to get a picture of Grandpa. I guess we will just have to meet for lunch again! Thank you Phyllis!

  2. For Dear Andrea's Husband, I just read about your lovely wife and with all my heart am grieving with you. I am so sorry. I would have tried to rescue my Great Dane, had she ran on the ice, also. When one absolutely has to leave this world, it is a tiny bit comforting to know that you died for that which you loved and believed in, and, she certainly did. What a brave woman.
My prayers are with you, and they work. For we know that in ALL things, God works together for the GOOD of them who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 Sheila Mae

  4. I don't know you Tom, or your wife. I saw her blog on the news. I was so very moved by her story. Your wife sounds like an incredibly awesome lady and am sad that such a neat person and animal lover is no longer here. I have no doubt she is w/her dogs as I type...
We could use more people like her in this world.
I adore those who also share my passion for animals.

    Our prayers are with you.

  12. I could not be more sad for you. I understand what Andrea did. I would have done the same without a second thought. I know there is a special place in Heaven for her and her baby dogs. I pray that there is some peace in knowing that her last thoughts and actions were for love.

And just so you know, there are many people I have spoken to today who may not know you and may never be able to tell you, but they are sad for you and praying for you. They all understand the love she must have felt in doing what she did.

    Sorry for your loss,

  13. So sorry for your loss, we are "dog people" and many happy memories are made from our four legged friends. I can not imagine the loss you are feeling with the loss of your wife. She sounded like a great lady that will be missed by many.

  14. My heart was broken when I saw Andrea's story on the news. Now that I have read over her blog, it is even more so. What an amazing spirit she had. Her love of her husband, dogs, family, & friends is so obvious. I am praying and hopeful that Gollum is found today. I know he must be scared to death but what a good boy to stay at the pond until help arrived. He needs to be home with Andrea's husband and I hope that happens. Prayers for all of you close to Andrea and for Gollum's safe return.

Tom, I doubt you remember me, but I was a friend of Andrea's from High School, and we were neighbors when she lived at the electric building. I'm so sorry, she was a beautiful person, and a good friend.

I'm a dog lover, too. She did what her heart told her to do. God bless everyone that knew and loved her.

  31. I was heartbroken to hear of the tragic outcome of the dogs' outing, but I love reading all of Andrea's posts. Even though Andrea and her dogs had short lives, it is obvious that they filled each day with joy and love and adventure. Far more than many people have who love long lives. God bless them all.

  32. My heart is broken reading this story. I know Gollum will come back home. PLEASE post and let us know when he is home safe. I hope the family keeps checking the house inside and out.

Can someone please look by Grace Community Presbyterian Church on North Riverside Drive. Put a flyer up outback in the parking lot by the dumpster. I think Gollum is in a house around there. Walk down the alley and call his name and listen. I wish I was there to help you look for him.
Sending lots of healing love to Tom and Gollum.

  33. Please let us know about Gollum!! Im happy there is a reward..maybe if someone does have him they will return him for that reason alone-although, surely somebody out there will do it because it is the RIGHT thing to do! He needs to be HOME. From reading the blogs, it sounds like he runs towards a car to get warm...and walks on the pavement instead of grass because he likes to...so he could be anywhere....its windy and cold...and she said he runs when its windy. I live in Keller..please post if you need help!! For some reason I cannot get that dog out of my mind. :(

  37. I think I met Tom & Andrea at Tipps Canine Hollow Dog Park, because I remember an IG named Artimus and the mans name was Tom. I am the Mom to 2 IG's and another that has passed away. I would have done the same to rescue my babies,Andrea to all of us was a true lover of all life to risk cold icey water to rescue the dogs she loved. I can not imagine the pain Tom is going through, but to know she gave her life trying to save 2 others is the true definition of a hero. How could she do anything else? She could not stand there and do nothing, and time was wasting if she had stood there and done nothing, she reacted and did what I would have done too, try to save her babies! Tom you are in my thoughts and prayers and I am also praying for Gollums speedy and safe return!God bless you!!

  39. Tom, I am deeply saddened by the news of your sudden and tragic loss of Andrea. It was an absolute honor and delight in knowing your lovely wife. And to also know that she was your BEST FRIEND and the LOVE of your life. Both you and Andrea have always been wonderful and caring people ever since the first day we met. I will always remember and love you two for that and the many moments we all shared as neighbors, Poker playin and pub pals and most importantly, as supportive FRIENDS. The kindness and care that your wife showed to all will be missed tremendously, but never forgotten. Just by reading the outpour of sentiments and prayers from dog lovers, strangers and friends alike. It makes one satisfied in knowing that the special warmth and kindness of her soul had reached so many others here on earth.

She was indeed a gift to have known in my life and during my years back in Fort Worth. Both you and Andrea always took the time to share your day, your understanding and sincere interest in others around you. Andrea was the kind of person that when you said your "See you laters", you walked away seeing such a beautiful soul and smile, and could not help but be reminded of those dearest to you in life. She was that caring and that genuine. She was like BACK HOME for me.

Andrea was the only person I knew who could strike up a memorable convo from just a simple Texan style "How ya doing?", while sharing an elevator ride at the old HPLofts, with her and her lil babies staring up at you with those happy lil eyes and infectious smiles, hoping for some little love and attention.

My deepest condolences to Tom and the entire Benua family and friends. May you find strength and courage in knowing that she is at peace, patiently waiting for that one glorious day when we will see her again. That the beauty in your every day ahead is a gift that she shares with you. That when blessed with the experience, you will feel her warm smile with everything around you that is alive and in harmony. Hearing every beat of her caring heart when children are at play. I pray that not only you see and feel those blessings in your every day, but that you find PEACE and comfort in knowing that Andrea is sharing them and feeling them too, right beside you. This I pray.
